What is Discoid Eczema?

One of the most puzzling kinds of Eczema is Discoid or Nummular Eczema. In this kind of Eczema, clear coin shaped lesions is found on the patient’s body. This most commonly affects the legs although it can also be seen on arms, hands and stomach. Like in other kinds of Eczema the exact causes for Discoid Eczema are not known. However there are a number of factors, which can give rise to this condition. For instance, dry skin, low humidity, some medications such as isotretonin (for acne treatment), and even some bacterial infections. Sometimes woolen clothing or even frequent bathing can bring on the rash. Soaps and detergents are also thought to cause this reaction in some individuals. The rash appears as small red spots and lesions first on the skin. Later on it takes the form of rings with a clear center and spots surrounding the outside of the circle. Sometimes the lesions clear on its own after some time and treatment. In some other patients, these lesions can be seen even after three or four years. 

The condition is seen more commonly in men, as compared to women and is most prevalent between the ages of 55-65 years. The treatment remains the same as in other forms of Eczemas; oils and lotions to moisturize the skin, topical steroidal and anti bacterial creams and lotions and antihistamines.
