Who can get Eczema?
Eczema can affect almost anyone, although it is most commonly seen in small children and infants. According to the National Institute of Health almost 15 million people in the US suffer from some form of Eczema. About two in ten newborns develop Eczema, however in most cases the condition goes away after the child reaches the age of 15. Some continue to have Eczema throughout their lives.
It is not clear why some people get Eczema while others don’t. Eczema is an abnormal response of the body’s immune system to an external factor. This could be a chemical found in soaps, or some substance in food or even in the environment. Eczema is not contagious, that is you cannot catch it from another person. There is also no cure for it, but there are several treatments available for reducing the pain and severity of the condition.
